Body weight impact on your spine

When someone is fat?

WHO (World health organization) has made exact measures based on different studies: increase body weight and fatness can be determined with calculation of body weight index. That is body weight divided by body height on square.

Normal body weight is in the area of body weight index between 19,5 and 25, increasing body weight is between 25 and 30 and fatness is over 30.

Body of healthy woman should not contain more than 30% (and not less than 20%) of fat and in the body of healthy man should fat represent 15-20% share of the whole body.

Body weight impact on your spine

Because of the increased volume of subcutaneous fat, body does not only loose the right form, but there is also reduced skeleton flexibility and motion ability.

Overweight people, especially men, are carrying most of their extra weight in their stomach. That’s why their abdominal muscles are becoming weaker in they are having big troubles supporting the spine, which is a lot more vulnerable without strong muscle support. Abdominal muscles also support spine at hard work, like lifting or carrying burden around. When abdominal muscles are tensed, the pressure in abdominal hollow increases and spine it’s relived of its burden.

Harmful impacts of overweight body:
  • Due to bad body poise body weight does not vertical press on vertebra and intervertebral discs.
  • Early appearance of osteoarthrosis due to overweight.
  • Flatten intervertebral discs are likely to slip which doesn’t ease shocks.
  • Intervertebral joins are starting sinking due to thinner intervertebral discs what causes bigger friction in join at every move. That’s why joins can get irritated and painful.
  • Because the spine is wear out and abdominal muscles are not having enough strong support when lifting burdens, there can come to increasing risks of acute spine problems.

Weaker and thinner muscles and lack of body activity lead to reduced usage of calories. That even increases positive food calories effect and causes bigger amount of fat in body.

Overweight people are facing early with degenerative changes on their joints and spine. Most distinctive changes are on those joints which are wearing biggest weight. These are: lower back, knees, ankles and hips.

Wear joints and spine cause chronic pain, reduce flexibility and cause early disability. Extreme cases can also lead to operational procedures.

Some problems can be avoided with regular and proper body activities.
